Conservation Advocate Position

Be an advocate for birds! Join our committee dedicated to promoting conservation issues that affect birds in the Lowcountry through policy change and education. Help us inspire people to appreciate and protect birds, wildlife, and their natural habitats.  

Tasks

Become informed about local and state conservation issues on and around Hilton Head Island.Help shape our responses to effect change.Attend Hilton Head Island Audubon Conservation Committee meetings.Engage members of our community and local leaders about conversation issues through letters, education and talks to help protect birds and preserve their habitats.Assist in implementing our conservation plans including shorebird protection signage, responsible management of cats, and monitoring local land use.Be active in HHA by attending member events and other venues to learn about and inform others about our important work.  

Skills

A desire to give back to your community in support of local conservation efforts.No experience with conservation is necessary, but essential is a readiness to learn about and participate in developing and carrying out our conservation plans.A passion for learning about birds and how conservation can help their environment.Willingness to engage with people and be an ambassador for HHIA through letter writing, attending town and county meetings as necessary, and bringing awareness and education to others about our conservation issues.

Setting

Committee meetings are held at various locales such as coffee shops; public or other meetings are in community settings; writing or researching at a home computer; other outings as necessary.  

Time Commitment

Attend Conservation Committee meetings, typically once a month for 1-1.5 hours. Depends on issue or need at the time, averaging 1-3 hours per week.
