Hello Everyone,

On Tuesday, May 8, 2018 we brought our spring field trip season to a close with a fantastic trip to the James W. Webb Wildlife Management Area. The weather was beautiful, and there were no bugs, but plenty of great birds! Everywhere we went from pine woodlands to freshwater ponds and agricultural fields to cypress tupelo swamp, we were treated to the sights and sounds of 56 different species of birds! And as you can see from the list below (also attached), there were some pretty special birds in there too. Even as we first arrived, a swallow-tailed kite flitted right above us several times just over the tree tops! A crew from DNR took us to some terrific areas where we had great looks at most of the birds listed, especially Mississippi kite, purple gallinule, red-cockaded woodpecker at the nest box, prothonotary warblerblue grosbeakindigo buntingBachman’s sparrow and more. We also had special treat watching a pair of orchard orioles gathering nesting material just a few meters in front of us.

A great big thanks to HHI Audubon President, Jane Hester for leading this trip, and also to the great folks at DNR for sacrificing office time to go out and birds with us! 😉 Stay tuned later this summer when we’ll announce our fall season of field trips to begin in September.

All the best for a great summer, and we’ll see you soon!
