Join Coastal Discovery Museum naturalist Carlos Chacon on a bird watching outing at Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge the morning of July 10 starting at 7:30am. The group will meet at the trail entrance sign in the parking lot.
Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge offers a combination of maritime forest, salt marsh, and freshwater ponds. This diversity of habitats provides great opportunities to see numerous birds. July is a great time to visit Pinckney Island, since multiple species of neotropical songbirds will be actively breeding. We expect to see painted buntings, summer tanagers, great crested flycatchers and many more. The rookery at Ibis Pond should also be active with diverse nesting wading birds. By July many will have hatchlings in their nests.
We usually continue to Starr Pond, so that our total mileage is about 2 l/2 miles, most of it on a gravel/dirt road or mowed grass.
Carlos Chacon is an expert naturalist and bird watcher who divides his time working part time as the Manager of Natural History at the Coastal Discovery Museum and organizing and leading nature-focused trips to his home country of Costa Rica.
Directions: Pinckney is located between Hilton Head and Bluffton, SC, with entrance on highway 278 on the Bluffton side of the bridge. NOTE: There are no restrooms at Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge. Bring water and sun protection (sunscreen and hat).
Tickets for members and nonmembers are $12. Participation capped at 15 people.
