Ever wonder how scientists can study the movement of migratory birds across continents? One tool, the Motus Wildlife Tracking System, is making it easier than ever before to track many small flying animals across long distances. Learn about this technology, the Motus network within South Carolina, and how scientists use the technology to answer questions about migration strategy, habitat use, and daily activity patterns among other research applications.

About the Presenter: Heather Kraus is the Education and Outreach Coordinator at Nemours Wildlife Foundation. Since joining the Foundation team in May 2021, she has worked to develop and deliver engaging presentations and programs that explore the Lowcountry’s natural history. When not exploring the property with small groups, she can be found monitoring bluebird boxes, trying to attract purple martins to “luxury gourd-partments,” and installing and maintaining Motus tracking stations. Heather earned a B.A from Washington & Jefferson College in Pennsylvania and an M.S. from Emporia State University in Kansas. Prior to joining Nemours, she worked on various wildlife research projects across the country.
