Hilton Head Audubon

Great Egret (photo by Scott Clark)

A “Faithful Five” braved the (predicted) storm and were rewarded by Mother Nature with another beautiful day in Paradise.  From left to right below are Fearless Leader Bob Clemens, Jeff Davis, Chris Cullum, and John Grobe.  Not shown is our camera-shy photographer, who has chosen to remain anonymous because she wants no one to know that she consorts with so motley a crew!

John and his (anonymous) assistant employed the Preserve’s pressure washer to clean to Pocosin Boardwalk, and “slow-walked” the job to make sure they could play with the pressure washer again next month to complete their work!

Jeff and Chris hauled some milled asphalt to the refresh an area of the bike racks that had become muddy, and then joined the crew at the pond to cull dead limbs and branches for removal. We routinely remove debris as a fire mitigation step, as well as to crest a more “cultivated forest” around the pond.

Jeff is helping move a hose to aid the pressure-washer team.

Chris Cullum is culling debris as described above. (That seemed a fitting task for a man truly born to “Cullum!”)  We culled and removed two truckloads of debris from around the pond.

Fearless Leader Clemens is using a grappling hook to clear grasses from our newly-installed turtle log! Thanks again to Kolcun Tree Service, who donated this log and those lining the parking lot. May the Forest be with you!

Tony Facenda happed by with a red-bellied woodpecker he had rescued to release in the Preserve.  Tony volunteered regularly during his high school years, and is home for the summer.  Welcome home, Tony!

Our next Second Saturday Work Day will be on June 13th. As always, we gather in the parking lot at 8:30 and head for home no later than 10 AM!  RSVPs are not required, but helpful to Rclemens318@gmail.com.
